- Ubuntu releases are made semiannually by Canonical Ltd, the developers of the Ubuntu operating system, using the year and month of the release as a version number. The first Ubuntu release, for example, was Ubuntu 4.10 and was released on 20 October 2004.
- Before 12.04, Ubuntu server installs a server-optimized kernel by default. Since 12.04, there is no difference in kernel between Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server since linux-image-server is merged into linux-image-generic. For Ubuntu LTS releases before 12.04, the Ubuntu Desktop Edition only receives 3 years of support.
Ubuntu on Windows allows you to use Ubuntu Terminal and run Ubuntu command line utilities including bash, ssh, git, apt and many more. Please note that Windows 10 S does not support running this app. To launch, use 'ubuntu' on the command-line prompt (cmd.exe), or click on the Ubuntu tile in the Start Menu. Like its desktop counterpart, Ubuntu Server is a very popular choice among Linux users. You'll mostly find it powering servers in data centers or other enterprise environments, as that's what it's made for. If this is out of your depth, consider sticking with the Ubuntu Desktop edition.
